„Experience the essence of Iceland on our Snæfellsnes Private Tour – a full-day journey through the country’s most diverse landscapes. While the South Coast has the crowds, Snæfellsnes has the mystique. On this exclusive trip, you will circle the legendary glacier, walk black pebble beaches, stand atop volcanic craters, and witness the mountain made famous by Game of Thrones. This is the perfect choice for travelers who want to see every face of Iceland in a single, unforgettable day.
Why CarBuddy? Your Journey, Defined by Comfort and Story.
Peace-of-Mind Timing
No waiting for 50 other people. We stay longer where you want and skip what you don't. It is your day.
Your Local Storyteller
You don’t just get dates and facts – you get a local who knows the small stories, the shortcuts, and the best viewpoints when the big groups arrive. It feels more like travelling with a knowledgeable friend than sitting on a tour bus.
Ultimate Comfort
Warm, clean, private vehicle. Door-to-door service from your accommodation. No waiting in the wind, no sharing with strangers. We handle timing, roads and parking – you just enjoy the views, take photos and breathe.
Experience
Snæfellsnes is often called 'Iceland in Miniature’ because it packs the entire country’s geology into one peninsula. Your journey takes you through lava fields covered in soft moss, past dramatic sea cliffs teeming with birdlife, and along the coastline dominated by the Snæfellsjökull glacier—the fabled entrance to the center of the Earth.
Because this is a long day (approx. 10-11 hours), comfort is key. With CarBuddy, you travel in a private vehicle with plenty of legroom, setting your own pace. Whether you want to hunt for seals at Ytri Tunga, test your strength on the lifting stones of Djúpalónssandur, or spend extra time capturing the perfect shot of Kirkjufell, the day is yours. We handle the driving and the timing; you simply connect with the raw power of the West.”
The South Coast Saga:
A Chronicle Of Fire, Ice, and Water.
Below is what your day can feel like – not just what you will “tick off”. Times are flexible, but the idea stays the same: more time where it matters, and space to actually breathe in each place instead of rushing back to the bus.
Ytri Tunga - Gold Sands and Curious Eyes
Start with a surprise: a golden sand beach in a land of black lava. This coastal stretch is beautiful for a walk, but the real eyes are often on the water. Ytri Tunga is a well-known haul-out spot for harbor seals. While nature offers no guarantees, this is one of the best places in Iceland to spot these curious creatures resting on the offshore rocks. It’s a peaceful, wildlife-focused start to your saga.
Búðir - Minimalist Beauty at the Edge of the Lava
You arrive at a place of striking contrasts. A pitch-black wooden church stands alone in a field of wind-swept yellow grass, with the white cap of the Snæfellsjökull glacier rising silently in the background. This is a photographer’s dream. The atmosphere here is one of profound silence and space. Your guide gives you time to walk the path, breathe in the salty air, and capture one of the most iconic, yet peaceful, images of Iceland.
Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge - Step Inside the Mountain
From the road, it looks like a deep scar in the mountain. But as you approach, the mountain opens up. This is your adventure moment. You can step onto the stones in the stream and walk inside the narrow gorge (weather permitting). The walls tower high above you, moss hangs green and heavy, and the light dims. It feels like entering a secret world known only to folklore and those willing to get their boots a little wet.
Arnarstapi & Gatklettur. Nature’s Sculpture Gallery
The coast here is alive. You walk along the cliff edge where the ocean has carved the basalt rock into dramatic arches and towers, including the famous Gatklettur arch. Above the roar of the waves, you hear the cry of thousands of seabirds nesting in the cliffs. Your guide will point out the stone statue of Bárður Snæfellsás, the half-troll guardian of the peninsula, adding a layer of myth to the raw geology.
Djúpalónssandur Beach - A Test of Strength on Black Pearls
You descend through a lava maze to reach a beach unlike any other. The ground is covered in smooth, black pebbles that look like pearls. Rusted iron remains of a British trawler from 1948 lie scattered on the sand – a haunting reminder of the ocean’s power. Your guide will show you the legendary „lifting stones” used by Vikings to test their strength. Will you try to lift them? It’s a place where history and nature collide violently.
Hólahólar - The Hidden Amphitheater
Drive into a hidden world. Hólahólar is a cluster of crater-like hills that form a natural amphitheater. Once you drive inside, the wind dies down, and a strange, comforting silence takes over. It’s an off-the-beaten-path gem where you can feel completely alone with the landscape.
Saxhóll Crater - A Stairway to the Volcano
It’s time to gain some altitude. Rising directly from the mossy lava fields is Saxhóll, a perfect volcanic crater. You ascend via a convenient iron staircase that winds up the side. At the top, the reward is instant: a 360-degree panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, the lava fields stretched out like a frozen sea, and the glacier behind you. You are standing on the rim of the earth’s fire.
Kirkjufell - The Arrowhead Mountain
You’ve seen it on postcards, and you’ve seen it in Game of Thrones. Now, you stand before it. Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) rises in perfect symmetry, arguably the most beautiful mountain in Iceland.

FAQ: Snæfellsnes Private Tour Details
How long is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula Private Tour?
This is a full-day adventure. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula Private Tour typically lasts between 10 to 11 hours comfortably. Since it is a private tour, we can adjust the pace.
Are the entrance fees to attractions visited during the Snæfellsnes Tour included in the price?
Most natural attractions on theSnæfellsnes Tour are free to visit, and all parking fees are included in your private tour price.
What Should I wear for the Snæfellsnes Peninsula Tour?
Icelandic weather is unpredictable. We recommend dressing in layers with a waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes.
What is the best time of year to take the Snæfellsnes Peninsula Private Tour?
This tour is spectacular year-round. Summer (June-August) offers the Midnight Sun, puffins (sometimes seen near cliffs), and lush green landscapes. Winter covers the peninsula in dramatic snow, making Kirkjufell look like a scene from a fantasy movie. However, daylight is limited in winter, so we adjust the itinerary to maximize the light.
Can we customize the Snæfellsnes Private Tour?
Absolutely. That is the beauty of a private tour. If you want to spend more time hiking into the Rauðfeldsgjá gorge, linger longer at the Black Church, or add a specific restaurant stop, just let your driver know. We tailor the day to your energy and interests.
Is the Snæfellsnes Private Tour suitable for children or seniors?
Yes, it is very suitable. The walking distance at most stops is short and the terrain is generally easy (mostly flat paths or viewing platforms). We can always skip harder parts like the gorge walk if needed.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?
Safety is our #1 priority. The roads on the peninsula can be challenging in extreme winter weather. If the forecast makes driving unsafe, we will contact you to reschedule for another day or offer a full refund. If the weather is just „Icelandic” (windy or rainy but safe), the tour goes on – the dramatic weather often makes for the best photos!
Can you pick us up from locations outside of Reykjavík?
Our standard price includes door-to-door pick-up from any accommodation within the Greater Reykjavík area. If you need pick-up from Keflavík Airport (KEF), this can be arranged for an additional fee or as part of a custom itinerary. Please contact us before booking to arrange this.
What kind of vehicle is used for the Snæfellsnes Private Tour?
We use comfortable, modern vehicles suitable for Icelandic conditions – typically a sedan or minivan for up to 8 guests. All vehicles are regularly serviced, have winter tyres when needed, and plenty of space for luggage and day bags. If you have special requests (extra luggage, child seats), please tell us when booking.
Will we definitely see seals on the Snæfellsnes Tour?
While Ytri Tunga is one of the best places in Iceland to spot seals, they are wild animals. We have a high success rate of seeing them, especially on calmer days, but sightings on the Snæfellsnes Private Tour cannot be 100% guaranteed.
What is the main difference between the Snæfellsnes Tour and the South Coast?
The Snæfellsnes Private Tour offers more diversity in a smaller area (’Iceland in Miniature’) and is generally less crowded than the South Coast. It has a more mystical, remote feel, whereas the South Coast is famous for its massive waterfalls and black sand beaches.
